IIIT Bangalore interview

We reached the campus for the interview 5 minutes before the scheduled time. I attended a lot of interviews before this but the interview at IIITB seemed special. A little bit of tension and the joy to be in Bangalore balanced my psyche as my brother parked the car in the parking lot. He was my cousin’s friend who was there to accompany me as he himself was a student of IIITB. Nevertheless, both of us went to the help desk located at the main gate where I had to verify myself as me. Then we were handed over a paper which listed all the process that was going to be held and was directed to the main building. Impressive as we already knew what all we had to do without any problem. So we headed towards the main building. It looked great from outside with some perfect combination of colors and a large logo at the top. The campus was tidy enough which seemed to have a great maintenance with a lush green lawn adding to the beauty.

We entered the building where I could see huge serpentine queues of padhaku students waiting to get their interview call letter verified. I followed the trend with a great doubt of qualifying against them. Finally my turn came and I could see that the verifiers were the students of the college itself. After verifying they directed me towards the conference room which was already packed up with students and their parents. While heading towards the conference hall I saw the college interiors which had an impression that we are checking into a five-star hotel. Suddenly my urge to study here got increased which even boasted my confidence. After reaching the hall I found that a lot of seniors were trying to control the overall process by calling out the students. I could hardly find a place for me but did not have a problem as one of the seniors came and arranged a seat for me. I sat down and tried to relax a bit. I saw a big board in front which was divided into five parts. All the parts were showing some information regarding the college, the interview process, and the placements and so on. The seniors seemed quite cooperative as they fulfilled the queries of each student without a kink of hesitation. They were calling out the students with their registration number where each student was to have a biometric verification after which they will be proceeded towards the document verification section. So I waited for my turn to come. The student next to me was brushing up for the interview and had his GATE Scorecard on top which had 48 printed on it. I tried to console myself as I could manage only 17.33. Then I avoided him and looked around the room. Everyone was busy preparing, so I also tried to recall the topics which I will present at the interview. After a long wait finally my registration number was called and I went ahead. Completing all the proceedings, I was then forwarded to the document verification section. There were three queues each preceded by a lady who seemed to be the faculty of the college. There again I had to wait for sometime when finally my turn came. The lady asked for all my certificates- original as well as the photocopy. I had already arranged them in order as stated and she verified them with ease. Then she took all the photocopies and stapled them while returned the original copies back to me. The stapled lot was handed over to a senior who then accompanied me to the waiting room. “The interview will take place within fifteen minutes” said one of the seniors. Instantaneously all my confidence started evaporating and I realized the tension surrounding me. But suddenly my brother came to my rescue and took me to show the college. As we had fifteen minutes so we quickly took a small tour of the campus. We went to the hostel, the boundaries, and the buildings and finally back to the war zone. On my return the senior took a bunch of students including me to the interview section. We made a queue and followed him like school students. On reaching the interview section we all sat down on the chairs provided until our names were called. Amazingly a man came and called out all the names of the girls present and took them. I was indignant with the mere show of favoritism towards women but waited for my turn without any protest. Suddenly that man came again, called out my name and instructed me to follow. He led me to a room for my interview process.

I took a deep breath and entered the room with my file. There was an old man with some of the last hairs on his head waiting for me to enter. He looked at me through his spectacles, greeted me and then offered to sit down. I too greeted him and sat down. He seemed quite friendly and hence I gained confidence. Without wasting a single bit of time he went through the stapled photocopies and threw the first question towards me. “Well Satyam tell me about you and do add something which I would really love to know”. Now that was an easy question as I started with my name, my family, occupation of parents, my schooling, college, marks, hobbies and finally added that I love to collect small Ganesha showpieces, love to visit different places, scored 1230 in GRE and already have an offer letter from MINDTREE. He listened to all this with much curiosity and it seemed that he got impressed. Among so many listings about me, he liked my collection of Ganesha and asked, “How many do you have at present and do you know that Ganesha idols are available in different forms like six packs Ganesha, Ganesha playing cricket and likely. I had my answer in an instant stating that at present I have around 20 unique pieces and that I have learnt about these various forms from the internet. I don’t have them but I would love to collect if I get them. He said good and asked whether I have been offered the joining date in MINDTREE. I clarified that I have the offer letter but the joining letter will be notified later. He nodded his head and said, “You were asked to prepare a topic. So please go ahead”. I said yes when he suddenly forwarded a pen and a paper to explain. I denied the offering and said that I would rather use the white board to explain. He got impressed and said “good”. I went ahead recalling all the topics from my preparation of Mobile Communication. I knew that this was the only chance to prove myself and I went along. I explained all the topics covering how mobile system works, how a call is transferred between users, how data gets transferred, about base stations, about frequency reuse with the maximum possible diagrams. The man listened as if he is my student asking questions in between. Suddenly he poked me and told to come back and sit down. I cleaned the board and sat down. Then he spoke, “We need this presentation to see certain points and I have got what I wanted. From your file I see that you have pursued your higher studies from Bhubaneswar while you belong to Kolkata. Why so?” I tried to convince him by saying that I wanted to go out and study as my native place Barrackpore is a small town. And as Bhubaneswar was the nearest so by default it was the first choice. Then he asked why I wanted to do an MTech. I stated that during my Btech I learnt many things and wanted to give a shine to my learning. Moreover before entering a professional life I wanted to finish my higher studies. He went on and asked that do I have any programming knowledge. I stated about my knowledge which I acquired during my graduation and have the potential to write programs. Then he said,”OK great. Anything you would want to know”. I went ahead and asked “Tell me something about you?”. He said his name and told that he is a professor of the same institute and runs a company named RADIX which is situated on the first floor of the same building. Then I asked about the college and the relationship between the teacher and the student. He answered that this college has a very good decorum and the college is a good place for learning. He also added that if you get a chance to study here then you will surely love the college. Then he returned my file and had a handshake stating “Nice to meet you”. I thanked him and went out with a little bit of joy that I did not ruin the interview and have a stand to get selected.

Finally on May 11, 2011 I got the good news of my selection. I received an email from IIITB stating that I have been selected to pursue my Mtech from the institution.

  1. Hi Satyam,
I am currently working for Infosys,Hyderabad with ten months of experience.

    My credentials include
    - an aggregate of 91% in 10th
    - an aggregate of 87% in 12th
    - an aggregate of 71.71% in B.E Computer Science pursued from VTU.

My query is my B.E aggregate low enough to apply for Mtech course at IIIT-B?

    Regards
    Sridivya

  2. @Sridivya j Hey you have an excellent career. Dont worry about your B.E marks as it will be compensated by your other marks. Moreover the marks is not the only criteria for selection.Your written exam score, interview performance and the marks combined together forms the portfolio for selection. In addition you have about one year experience which will really count. If you are interested to do M.Tech then I would really ask you to go ahead and apply.Do well in all other sections and you do have a good stand for selection. All da best for your future.

  5. Hi satyam,
I am in dilemma whether to join IIIT bangalore or not.AT present I am working in TCS but i want to pursue higher education in computer science.Because of financial constraints M.S is not an option for me.I have couple of questions.
How is IIIT banglore when compared to IIT m.tech?
Will it add any value to my career as I am going to invest two years?Besides money is also important apart from knowledge :).
How are the placements? The placement offered in IIITB is at par with those offered to MBA grads?
I am asking too many questions but it will help me to decide my future. Please answer my queries as you are studying there.
    Thanks in advance.

  6. @sourav Hey don't get confused regarding the college selection as IIITB is one of the best college I know. It's not bcoz I m studyn here but bcoz I really felt it after coming here. If you really want to learn then this institute is probably the best selection. You will be grooved into situations where you won't have any option other than learning.
Its not fair to compare IIIT's and IIT's and IIM's. They all have their own edges. But this college mtech also has great values and you can count on me regarding that.
Regarding placements: The placements are quite good with an average package of around 7-8 lakhs per annum with good bunch of companies visiting the college.
One more thing i wud add is that the faculty over here are awesome and I bet that you will rarely get such facilities provided here.
Hope I was able to connect well. If u hav any more queries then feel free to post it. I ll reply them as soon as possible.
    Regards
    Satyam.

  7. Thanks!Sorry for my late reply...
You really answered my queries.I am more interested in pursuing M.tech and i love technology, the only thing that bothers me is what if again after two years i land up in tcs or infy like companies;no offence meant but frankly these are service based companies and work here is not challenging or interesting.
Besides in India most of the engineers land up in service based IT companies that rarely give an opportunity to use your knowledge and skills.
I checked the official placements for IIITB,looks impressive but was wondering why companies like google or yahoo haven't visited it..considering its reputation kinda curious about the same :).
Just would like to know the job that is offered...

  8. Hey Sourav,
Campusing is good over here...Regarding Google, their requirements are very low nd its hard to predict their campus visit...I hope Google visited the campus once.... Moreover placements for our seniors have startd frm today itself with Cisco being the first company...If u r interstd to know then i ll post the details of the placements once i get it.

    regards,
    Satyam.

  10. Hi Satyam,
I ended up with your blog while I was googling through the life @ IIITB.Kudos!,Very well written.

Myself a BE 2011 pass out and got campus placed in HP R&D, Bangalore.I'm planning for higher studies.I wanted to know if it would be a good choice if I leave the job I have and get into IIITB for MTech. To brief a little about my profile, I plan to join MTech after 1 or 2 year from now and I'm looking forward to have my own technology start-up after an MTech.I thought MBA from IIM's would not help much as I aim for a techn start-up.

1.Could you please suggest me your opinion on that while you find time??
2.Would that be a good decision to leave an R&D job at HP for MTech @IIITB?
3.Also, what would be the scope/usefulness of course considering that I would go with my own Start up while I pursue my MTech?

Would Really appreciate if you could reply when you find time.

    Thank You,
    Abhijith

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hey Abhijith,
Thanks for the compliment. I must say that you hav a very good aspiration in life.
From my own experience, what i came to know over here is that you will be in a higher end if you have a job xperience. So my suggestion is that you have an xperience of 2 years and then apply for Mtech.
I think that if you have the potential to grab an R&D job after BE then you can really do well after MTech. Moreover this clg can really give you opportunities to learn things and then implement them in real life.
Regarding your future plans, this clg has an Incubation cell where people with new start up ideas are endorsed. Endorsements generally come from entrepreneurs who needs to be satisfied with your proposal. So you will have huge scope to learn and then start your own venture.
So in a nutshell, more than half of the batch are xperience fellows. Even people from Adobe, Set-Labs hav come here to pursue their Mtech. Its completely your decision whether you want to study or continue with your job.
From my part I can suggest that you can rightly have your MTech done coz jobs come and go but its knowledge you gain in the long run. Hope I could connect well.
Do reply back if you have any further queries.

    Regards,
    Satyam.

  12. Hey satyam,
I am currently in 12th and from this year onwards iiitb will start 5year integrated mtech program.i am a serious iit aspirant and want to know the facilities offered here and to compare iitb or iitd cse or iiithyd cse or iiitb.as the cse programs will complete in 4 years while iiitb course is of 5 yrs duration.whats ur take on it? btw very well written article.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hiii,
As the program is going to start from this year itself so we all are curious to know how it will be. If you are serious about iit then I would advice you to try for iit only. Even IIIT Hyd is quite good and is ranked alongwith the IIT's.

So what I would suggest is prepare well for the IIT's or IIIT Hyd. Keep IIIT Bangalore as your choice after these institutes.
Moreover this is an integrated course wherein you save 1 year and get a MTech degree. The campusing for MTech is quite good and you can completely count on me regarding it. The faculty is also very good. Now its upto you to decide what you want to do. Think well, talk with your parents and decide after your exam results are declared.
Hope I could answer your questions.
    Feel free to ask questions.
    Regards,
    Satyam.

  15. Hey
You have an excellent record....The gate percentile you have is enough to get you the exam waiver but I wonder that it is an old score...I am not sure whether they accept gate scores of previous years as well so you need to check that with the college website.... Regarding your scores you just remain pretty sure to get through all the steps....All you need to do is perform well in the interview and I think you can crack it quite easily.....
Yeah IIITB has 100% placement records as far as I know and the company list is also good....And plz mention your name as well while commenting....

  17. Hello (plz mention ur name),
I cant say whether u can have a seat or not.....that depends on your performance in the interview.....As you r not expecting much from ur gate, so I would recommend you to take the written exam(details available in the official website of college). Do well in the exam. Your marks are enough to get you into the college. All you need to do is perform well in the written and the interview as well.

I have 88.5% in X standard, 94.7% in 12th standard and 70.79% in B.Tech and currently I hold 1 yr 8 months of experience as SAP developer at Deloitte.
Any key inputs for the entrance exam preparation, as I have to manage my preparation along with my work load.
I'm very much interested in pursuing my M.Tech from IIIT B.
Your inputs would be of much help for me.

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hii Sandeep,
See as a suggestion I will say that it is all about aptitude testing. You must have sat for campus written exams after BTech, so this exam is quite similar.
You just need to have some hold on problem solving with simple English type questions and basic Computer Science Questions. The maths section questions are mostly mediocre and few tough questions.
Questions of the genre "If 5 men can do a work in 3 days and 6 women can do the same work in 5 days, the how many days will 3 men and 2 women take to finish the work together". I got atleast around 6 -7 questions of this type. One best resource I would say is R.S.Aggrawal. Just take out some time each day and solve the problems of the book and you are through.
Hope I was able to answer your queries.
    Regards Satyam.

  20. hi...satyam....got a lot of information about iiit b from your blog...thanks a lot.Can you through some light into the placement scenario. Actually i already work in a IT services major and would not like to go back into that area...can you plz help by providing your views??

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hello Rajat,
See this college is mainly oriented to get you placed in the IT industries only, but you will get some best profiles in there. Companies like Cisco, Emc2, IBM, Siemens, Duestche Bank, Intuit, Samsung etc visit the campus with good profiles with an average pay of around 7 lpa. Embedded stream has been started in full fledged from this year and teachers hope to get them placed as well. Companies like Broadcom will come for such streams. So it depends on you where you want to go. But I can surely say that you will get an improved profile to work on than what you do at present.

  24. Hii Rajat,
Yeah experience obviously provides an edge..You will have some prior knowledge which will help you to grab things easily and take the full advantage...It is upto you that when you want to apply... Experience will also help you during placements when experienced guys will obviously be preferred over freshers...Database is perhaps the most popular stream in this college with trends of maximum placements in this field in the recent years...Scope is good with some very nice subjects in offering..
Placement is undoubtedly good for all the streams...As database is well established in this college so you will get good infrastructure with some best faculties in the field..

Your marks are enough to let you through all the stages quite easily....Rest all depends on your performance in all the stages, viz, written and interview.....Yes it is written correctly in the website...The students are entitled to a whole semester internship in a company for which campus interviews are done...But it is not mandatory as students can write thesis as well....

  27. hey Ranjit,
It is completely unpredictable about how much is exactly necessary to get into the college...Many students apply and based on their academic performance and interview performance few get selected... Its not mentioned anywhere about how much is exactly necessary to get into the college...It depends about who u r and how u perform....So if u are an aspirant of getting into the college, then you can apply and then give a superb performance....
As for my academic performance, I have an above 80% career....

    3. Hii Niraj,
See each year students are called for interview directly through their performance in GATE if you apply for it....Each year the cutoff changes as per the number of students applying for it...So if you have applied for it and you get a waiver, then you will be intimated before the written exam and you will be directly called for interview...But the cutoff is not fixed and so its not wise to comment on it..

I am not expecting any world class facilities or faculty but I just want to know whether students are being made to work on projects related to their domains, are the faculty good enough to guide their students??I am also curious whether Intel has visited your campus till now?? Topics can be anything that you wish but you should have a good knowledge on it....No hard bounds like new topics...I presented my BTech topic which i had in my 8 Semester...A small topic on Mobile Communication....It is simply to check your potential to understand the topic and present it before the teacher....Again it depends whether you want to use the white board or the laptop...If you can explain the topic well then you are through....

Your blog has been a huge source of inspiration for me.I came across it while preparing for my GATE exams and now finally when I received the mail confirming my exam waiver,I couldn't be happier!!

The have mentioned that the interview will be held around 2-3rd may.
I had some doubts about the process of the interview:-

1.) do we select a topic of our own choice or is the topic given out by the interviewer?
2.)what kind of technical questions will be asked? (i am a computer science student)?
3.)i am a fresher and do not have any work experience, is this a drawback?? (though i have done my industrial training in java swing and asp.net)
4.) will they also be asking about the above mentioned projects??

hope you answer my queries as soon as possible dada. Eagerly looking forward to your mail :)

Topics are your own choice.....Interview will be of typical interview questions(See my article "Preparing for the Interview")...The freshers are given equal weightage as the experience holders(I myself is a fresher)....They might ask about your project, but they basically want to know whether you have a knowledge in programming...

I have 1 year of research experience abroad, so I was thinking to present my research as a technical topic. It completely depends on the companies providing the scholarships....They will call for interview on their own selection basis....It's not a college scholarship...But if you get a 4 GPA (out of 4) in the semester then you get a prize money from the college...

I did BTECH from a normal college and got 77.27 aggregate, 12th was 90 and X 86. my GRE was 1270, i dint get any exam waiver, i took the written test and got interview call, so will it be a plus point if I still put my gre score card. 79. Hi Satyam,

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
I have a working experience in IT industry for 1 year and 10 months. I have been working as SAP developer. But I stream was ECE in college.
I'm a little worried in choosing the topic for technical presentation.
Should the topic be related to something from Electronics back ground or can go a head on SAP architecture?
I am interested in having Networks and communications as my specialization, so I am more inclined to go with presenting on SAP architecture as it includes System hierarchies like server-client systems.
So, can I go ahead with a topic which is out of ECE?
Thanks for your patience in addressing queries of everyone.
    Really appreciate your concern.

Along with that, I would like to know more about it's tie up with foreign universities and product based companies. Please mention about actual scenario in students doing internship at such companies and uni and How many actually stand a chance to get into such universities. I am passionate about working in such companies and universities rather than going for consulting jobs.
The faculty here, I must say, is world class going by the profile displayed on website. Is this the actual scenario at IIIT-B.??

Yes the site cites the truth about the profs who are actually world class which you will feel once you join the institute....The college has tie ups with certain foreign universities where u can go to fetch ur interns but that is limited to very few students...Students get to do interns in companies like Cisco, Emc2, intuit, duesche bank, ibm etc etc in the final sem.....

you have to present the topic in front of the faculty as a seminar topic by using the white board.... Literally you have to teach the topic and the faculty will ask questions which you have to answer...prepare the topic well and present it as clearly as possible....then if you don't know the answer to a question, admit it and move on.... Its upto you whether you want to present it in your cv but generally profs don't see cv's....All the best..

C)Servlet, Beans, MVC Architecture..etc. from advance java
D)any other you can suggest in Java?
I am playing too safe by choosing java related topics. Is it a good move or my chance decreases a bit as I've not selected core subject?

the interviewer wants to see how well u can express urself while explaining a topic......I dont think u can do that while explaining java....It will be of much use when u go for a campus interview where they needs to see ur programming skills....If u r so desperate to explain java itself then u may go ahead with mvc applications...why it came into existence...what was the prob of previous models and so....but again it doesn't sound too good to me....u shud go for a core topic from ur field and explain it.... it was my advice....it's ultimately ur wish wat u want to go with...

  118. Hi, let me share my experience. I went there by 8 got done with all the formalities by 9. And I was the first one to be interviewed. My interviewer, now I know was Prof. Muralidhara V.N. The interview lasted for 25 mins and it was full on technical. He asked some questions on Binary Heap and BST. Then gave me a problem and told me to write an algorithm for it. So, I did and the complexity was O(n^2), then he told me to reduce it and then I made it to O(nlogn). Then he started discussing with me if it can be reduced further and this went on till the end until we reached a conclusion.

No presentation was asked and no HR type questions. I am glad that I had a very satisfying discussion with such a wonderful discussion and it didn't feel like interview anytime. At the end, he asked me if I have decided to pursue M.Tech from IIIT-B. I said yes and it was over.
